Vienna Würstelstand's and say

‘Light ’em up and pour me your finest’

For all of those that like the idea of lounging around on a Chesterfield leather couch, puffing away on a cigar with a whisk(e)y in hand, in a swanky looking place that makes you feel like you’re in a Frank Sinatra film, here are 4 bars that will do the trick:

Living Room Cigar Lounge at Park Hyatt – Whisky and cigars

Where: Am Hof 2, 1010

Opening times
SUN–WED: 8am–1am
THU–SAT: 8am–2am

This is the fanciest joint on this list. While the ‘living room’ is indeed set up in a charming and cosy atmosphere, it’s unlikely that many of us have a living room that looks anything as fancy as this. The warm wooden oak colours and Persian carpets, combined with the pricey cigars for sale, make it feel like you’re somebody important about to make a deal of a lifetime. As it’s part of the Park Hyatt hotel, you’ll find vacationers here, so you can pretend to be a rich spy from Azerbaijan traveling through Vienna for an assignment you absolutely can not talk about (yes, we’ve gone to great lengths to pick up in the past). You’ll also find the odd local here sunk into one of the Chesterfield couches, treating themselves to some aged spirits, and enjoying a cuban cigar hand-picked from the walk-in humidor. While the living room is probably the most elegant whisky bar in the city, it is also a place where you can come in the afternoons and enjoy some time on your laptop while you smoke your cigar and casually start to feel your head spin (or maybe that was the lunchtime whisky).

Good to know: if you really want to treat yourself, you can head downstairs to the spa after your whiskey.

Barfly’s Club – Whisky and cigars

Where: Esterhazygasse 33, 1060

Opening times:
MON–THU: 6pm–2am
FRI–SAT: 6pm–4am
SUN: 8pm–2am

The American Whisky Bar Barfly’s can be found in the souterrain of the rather noble Hotel Fürst, Metternich. Barfly’s emits a relaxing and intimate atmosphere that is supported by the perfectly attuned background music, the many black and white pictures of famous people hanging on the walls, and the dark wood interior.

They’re not lying on their website when they say they offer 1200 whisk(e)ys – the walls are lined with them! We are presented with a whisk(e)y menu (let’s say it’s more a book than a menu) in which every single Whisk(e)y they offer is either elaborately explained, or briefly summed up. Let’s just say that they offer everything the Whiskey-loving heart could wish for. Cigars are a big part of the bar as well, with varities hailing from Cuba and the Dominican Republic amongst the batch. The classics like Montecristo, Cohiba, or Rome&Julieta are the ones that people usually go for.

Good to know: they offer a Whisk(e)y of the Week!

Nightfly’s American Bar – Whisky and cigars

Where: Dorotheergasse 14, 1010

Opening times
TUE–THU: 8pm–2am
FRI–SAT: 8pm–4am
SUN: closed

Nightfly’s was opened in 1993 and is one of the oldest American bars in Vienna. Walking through the entrance, you’ll get a feeling like you’re in on something secret.

With a fine selection of 300 whisk(e)ys from all around the globe, Nightfly’s is a wonderland for Whisky lovers. In general, they pride themselves on getting their hands on aged whiskys. If you are unsure which whisky you’d like to try, the bar staff will find the right one for you. Not only that, but they’ll also recommend the right kind of cigar to pair with your drink, if you’re so inclined. However, if talking with the bartender is not your thing, there is also an extensive cigar menu, including all the necessary Information.

Good to know: they offer a monthly cigar at a reduced price!

What they recommend: Isle of Islay Whisky – a Scottish one – was recommended because of its peat smoke flavour. Apparently once you go Isle of Islay, you’ll never go back (according to them!).

Planter’s Club – Whisky and cigars

Where: Zelinkagasse 4, 1010

Opening times:
MON–THU: 5pm–2am
FRI–SAT: 5pm–3am
Happy hour: MON–SAT: 5pm–7pm

This bar named after the drink, Planter’s Punch, is fancy, but rather small at first glance. Big, fat, leather couches, a huge Persian rug and dimmed lighting make it a really cosy, and somehow, sexy place. There are doors lead to somewhat hidden seating and dance Areas, and this is when you realise that the place is bigger than what it first lets on. With their DJ-line up on Fridays and Saturdays, the bar attracts a bit more of a young cosmopolitan crowd craving the sass of the big city.

Now to the whisk(e)ys – Planter’s club offers a selection of 600 Whisk(e)ys, ranging from 9€ to 350€ per glass, so they definitely do have something for every taste and budget. On average 30-40 cigar smokers can be found there at a time, and Planter’s are currently selling 16 different cigars, imported mostly from Honduras and the Dominican Republic. The bartenders will be more than happy to help you choose the right cigar to match with your whisk(e)y. If you’re not in the mood for a whisk(e)y or cigar, there’s a conga line of cocktails on the menu!

Good to know: there’s a steak restaurant – the Livingstone – right next to the bar, so you can go all out and fine dine like an aristocrat before moving on to the bar for drinks, afterwards.

Dino’s American Bar – Whisky and cigars

Where: Salzgries 19, 1010

Opening times
MON–THU: 6pm–3am
FRI & SAT: 6pm–4am
SUN: 7pm–2am

The small, warm-looking bar is a great night haunt for anyone wandering aimlessly through the streets of the first district. While the décor at this veteran cocktail bar looks like it’s straight out of a cheap hotel, the staff behind the bar know their way around cocktails. And somehow the décor fits here with the cigarette smoke clouds, the old soda water dispensers, and the pretzel and nuts served as soon as you take a seat. While space is scarce, waiting, sitting at the bar, or squishing into the crowd is worth it for the large selection of whisk(e)ys, and what is supposedly, the largest selection of bourbons in the country. Dino’s was designed with Ernest Hemingway, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin in mind, with the intention of having them as local clientele… if they were alive…and in Vienna, today. And the atmosphere in the bar is usually to be enjoyed with some Jazz music overhead. Most people at Dino’s are enjoying a puff – many from the place’s cigar collection. It seems like a must to smoke in this heavily wooded den.

Good to know: Dino’s serves up seasonal cocktails
