J. B. Priestley’s ‘An Inspector Calls’ was first put on stage in 1945 and has maintained its popularity ever since. For British children it is a rite of passage to see it on a school trip, which helps many realise “Hang on – the theatre isn’t sh*t!”. The story revolves around the Birling family celebrating an engagement, only for Inspector Goole to burst in with news of a suicide that may be linked to them. Brimming not only with gripping tension, it is also a philosophical play about social conscience and the crumbling of middle-class values. Note: the production is in the original English.

Recommended if you like: seeing plays that have you gripping onto the edge of your seat, taking a break from Netflix to see some drama IRL, the theeeeaatre daaahling, being the one looking through those little binoculars no one else uses at the theatre, watching tense things unfold
