Bröselei cafe & bakery: A box of gluten-free goodness

Its big window looking out onto the street opens up the tiny space, making it bright and airy. Meanwhile, the smiles you’ll get from behind the counter – and the smile on your face provoked by the cakes in the counter – will make you want to hug everybody in the place.

Bröselei is a labour of love from the young, passionate baker and entrepreneur, Sabine. And being in her bakery is like being around her – she‘s the kind of person that has a smile that makes you think of sunshine, suncreen and sand stuck between your butt cheeks.

She doesn’t stop smiling when we visit the recently opened (January, 2015) Bröselei.

“I’ve always wanted to open a café of my own,” Sabine tells me. I wonder to myself if Austrian kids are baptised in coffee – she is the 4th under-30-year-old new café owner that has said that to me in the last year.

“I want it to be somewhere that everybody feels wohl.” (The lovely word wohl roughly translates to, ‘to feel at home’)

She emphasises the word everybody, hence the focus on baking everything without using gluten and lactose. This comes at a time as more and more people come out of the closet with their lactose and gluten eating intolerances.

The café serves up a small selection of cakes, including the moist choc chip and coconut muffin we pull apart and devour as fast as it takes to say ‘Milly munched on a monstorous muffin’ (no sexual inuendo implied, you dirty, dirty people). And while we’ve heard the rumours of gluten-free and vegan baked goods tasting like Hitler’s soul, after visiting Bröselei, we can safely conclude that these rumours could only have been spread by jealous, unimaginative, gluten-addicted bakers – as I’d go as far to say that this was one of the best muffins I’ve ever tasted.

Gluten-free sandwiches (bread all baked by Sabine) are also sold, which is a rare find in Vienna. But be quick, as the place is positioned next to a student home, across from the Physics university and up the road from the Publicity university, so hungry students snap them up quick.

And you’ll find no preservatives or additives here. Sabine is also a studied dietician, which means she’s a stickler for food that is nutritious and pure. She knows where every ingredient she uses comes from and that it’s 100 % organic and fair-trade. Vegans will also feel at home here, she assures us.

Her taste for purity is also evident in Bröselei‘s interior design, with it’s Scandanavian pine and straight line look. The café’s playlist overhead also helps set the mood for some serious coffee sipping, muffin munching, and chilling. There’s a long bench seat in front of the window, which acts as a huge flatscreen television, looking out onto the real life underway on the street outside.

And while the coffee machine looks timid, the premium quality of coffee from Vienna coffee roasters, El cafe, has it spitting out a damn fine coffee.

Trust us, you’ll taste Sabine’s smile in everything you consume in this pleasant little cafe.
