If June is any indication of what’s to come, this is going to be one hell of a summer people of Vienna! – markets are multiplying, festivals are fucking and creating big and beautiful new festivals (ok, that’s a little inaccurate, but there are a lot of festivals happening), and open air events are blooming like flowers all over the place.

Here’s a list of the 13 best things to do in June to make the most out of Vienna (and life):


Your ultimate new summer Sunday event has just been born

Sunday on the Roof with Vienna Würstelstand

When: SUN, June 17, 4pm–1am
Where: 25Hours Hotel’s Dachboden bar

Researching for our event guides every week, we’re well aware of how much this city is begging for a Sunday event worth going to – well, it’s arrived you beautiful people of Vienna!
(insert dramatic drum roll here) Vienna Würstelstand presents… Sunday on the Roof

Get off ground floor, raise yourself to the rooftops of Vienna and raise your glass to the weekend that was, and the week that will be, at the kick off of this new chilled Sunday sunset party series – Sunday on the Roof.

Sunday on the Roof will see an international and local crowd sipping at cocktails, or some other sundowner drink, while taking in the gorgeous Vienna skyline at sunset. Meanwhile, the damn good looking and talented guest DJs from the Heimlich collective, Marisa Sarah Mo & m ë x providing some Downtempo Techno type beats. Here’s a taste of their sound:

To add to the awesome atmosphere, there will also be:
+ Bloody Marys flowing
+ Yummy Pizza from the crowd at 1500 foodmakers
+ A piñata (because what’s a party without a piñata)
+ a Masseur giving out massages (10€ for 10 minutes)

The Austrian, Gulasch and Cevapcici festival!

Donauparkfest 2018

When: , June 7–June 10, 4pm–10pm (check out the program, here)
Where: Am Donaupark
Entry: free!

A 3 day festival will be happening in the lovely park on the Donauinsel, Donaupark. They’re packing a lot into this festival – Thursday starts with a sporty family fun day, which is followed on Friday by a Austrian Schmankerl-tag (think Backhendl and sausages). Saturday is the Gulasch festival (including huge pots of Gulash being served up plus lots of Hungarian fun and dance, and Sunday will finish off with a festival dedicated to the beloved Balkan sausage-like things, the Cevapcici. Plenty to do, no matter what day you go on. Check out the program, here.

Recommended if you like: seeing how many cevapcici you can eat in one sitting, festivals in the park, lying in the green grass, food from the East, Balkan music, dancing like a Hungarian (however that goes)

One of the city’s funkiest street festivals

Esterhazygassenfest 2018

When: FRI, June 8, 3pm—9pm
Entry: Free!

The Esterhazygassenfest is legendary and this year, it will be celebrating its 8th year. There will be stands selling stuff, including drinks and food. The main attraction will be the two Viennese bands playing live at the festival. A true Viennese summer experience! You see, the reason why this streetfest is so good is that all  the awesome bars, restaurants and theatres based on the street spill out onto the street (including the yummy Japanese cuisine from the street’s newcomer, Kuishimbo and the kickass cocktails from the Miranda bar. The theater, TAG, will also be having a costume flea market – you never know what you might find!

Recommended if you like: sunshine lolly pops and rainbows (like the song), family fun, a street transforming into something special, when the city closes streets to cars, sitting on a street curb drinking beer out of a plastic cup, the 6th district, dressing up in old theater clothes

Celebrate love, diversity and equal rights at the

Celebrate love at Vienna Pride, 23. Rainbow Parade in Vienna

When: SAT, June 16, 12am
Where: Rathausplatz

Thousands of people join this wonderful and colourful event every year to express their solidarity with the LGBTIQ communities in Austria and around the world. And while the celebration atmosphere makes the rainbow parade look like a huge street party, everyone is reminded that this is also a political demonstration demanding a non-discriminating society in Austria and elsewhere. So, strong messages of love, respect and solidarity are encouraged on either banners, t-shirts, your dance moves on the street, or in what you simply shout out loud!

Recommended if you like: equal rights, living in the 21st century, respecting your peers, colourful wigs, mainstream music from party trucks, the colours of the rainbow, human beings, love, solidarity, being in love with somebody the same gender as you, forgetting this whole idea of gender

Take over the city with your bike at the Friday Nightskate

Friday Nightskating 2018

When: May 25 – September 21, every week on Friday at 9pm
Where: Starts at Heldenplatz. The route changes every week

Ever been surprised by a horde of skaters and cyclists passing you by in the middle of the night on Vienna streets? Rest assured, this wasn’t your mind playing tricks on you, but rather it was the crowd doing the Friday Nightskate. This is a recurring summer event in Vienna that is a whole lot of fun! Rollerblade and bicycle enthusiasts meet every Friday at 9pm on Heldenplatz to follow their passion in cruising through the streets of Vienna (that’s right, they even shut down streets for this event!

Seek out some afterwork/school fun every damn night of the week

Party on a school night (that means you too! Even if you ain’t in school anymore!)

Warmer weather brings this city to life like no other and while it’s hard to find a nice chilled event to hit up through the week in the winter, during summer (especially this summer) you’ll have noooo problem at all. There’s a raft of laidback party events popping up throughout this month. Check out a few of the best of them below:

Spritzweindonnerstag Luftschloss Cobenzl

Don’t miss out on this unique chance (every Thursday evening until September) to enjoy an evening full of wine, Sprtizing (wait… what does that mean again?!), music and art while enjoying one of Vienna’s most beautiful views from the backyard of the cafe on the Cobenzl hill, Cafe and Schloss Cobenzl. The beautiful cafe’s gardens will act as the perfect scenery for a chilled evening, hanging out with friends and enjoying the good times of summer as long as it lasts. 

Albert & Tina 2018

When: every Wednesday
Where: Albertina Museum

Like every year, Albertina celebrates the coming of the summer season with style and invites all of Vienna’s creative and creative-looking characters to do the same on their terrace with their Wednesday event, Albert & Tina. Be sure to enjoy this event series at least once this year, which is a mixture of art, music and classy drinks in the scenic location looking over the opera house. It will be happening every wonderful Wednesday of every wonderful week.

A new micro brewery throws a party to celebrate its opening

Celebrate a new microbrewery! 100 Blumen brewery opening party

As if you needed an excuse to drink some good beer in the sun! Well, beer lovers should definitely not miss out on this micro brewery’s opening party, for their new HQ. Now, the reason you shouldn’t miss it is not only to celebrate a local loved brand but also to catch some good sounds from the fancy DJs lined-up for the event. There will be some live music too (word has it that Skero will be there!), good food, a live painting show, homemade lemonades and, of course, plenty of hoppy beverages to wash it all down! Live shows start at 3pm and the entry is freeeeee!

Recommended if you like: daytime drinking, craft-beer, partying under the sun, good music, micro-breweries, pretending to care about the craft of beer, knowing your lager from your pale ale, fruity notes

Seems like cool kids these days party while it’s still light out. So why not get some fun on under the sun this month with one of these open air parties:

Silent Disco Beach-Openair

When: SAT, JUN 9, 6pm–2am
Where: Strandbar Herrmann 

The best way to avoid boring conversations in your group of friends is simply to join a silent disco party! Put your headphones on and let the music take you to a different dimension. And if you can do all this while sipping on some cocktails and having your feet in the sand, we must say your Saturday sounds like a winner! You can switch between types of music directly on your headphones, so let those goldies oldie tunes sing straight to your heart – no one will know, no one will judge!


Merkwürdig / Open Air / Rave

When: SAT, JUN 16, 2pm
Where: Am Cobenzl

Dance through the day and then dance some more through the night!  The crew at the DJ collective, Merkwürdig, have put together quite a line up for this rave party, that should keep your eardrums and feet busy from dusk till dawn. The special location at the Cobenzl castle and cafe makes every party feel a bit out of place, which is exactly what you should be looking for to escape weekday routine.

Open air cinemas are one of the highlights of the summer season in this city. No more pondering for movie lovers on whether to stay in or head out. Open air cinemas offer those who get their tan from a movie screen a great way to spend an evening outside. Vienna offers a variety of open air cinemas, each screening a different flavour of film. And the good news is: many of them are free! Now, we’ll be publishing an ultimate guide to Vienna’s open air cinemas in the coming days, but for now, you should check out what’s showing at these ones that are starting in June:

A kick-ass indie design festival

Get Fesch at Fesch’markt Wien #16

It’s the indie creative designer’s scenes time to shine in the middle of this month again as the city’s big-ass designer market sets up shop in the industrial setting of the Ottakringer Brauerei. Over 200 stands will have a cute seller behind it, dealing with all kinds of crazy cool design stuff, from fashion, to jewellery to artisan food products. And the cluster of food trucks will be parked out front like always. Oh, not to mention the workshops and open air movies that will be happening also as part of the market.

Recommended if you like: indie design, being one of a kind, hipster beards, sleeve tattoos, buying local, getting inspired, wearing pants made by hand, having a collection of sunglasses that requires its own wardrobe

Europe’s largest free festival on the island

Donauinstelfest 2018

When: FRI–SUN, June 22–24, 10am–11pm
Where: Donauinsel
Entry: free!

600 hours of musical performances will make up the biggest free music festival in Europe in June, with popular performers such as Portugal. The Man, Antilopen Gang and Konstantin Wecker taking to the stages, this one should be a good one. Prepare yourself for days of eating garlic Langos, drinking beer you illegally purchased from your dancing neighbour, and endlessly queuing up to pee. And you can bring your granny too, there’s plenty on the programme for both old and young. This festival – you either love it or hate it – either way, it’s happening this month. Angus and Julia Stone

This Australian bro and sis duo have become famous all around the world for their unique Singer Songwriter sounds and wispy tunes. You feel like you’re on a holiday just by listening to them. And as they’re on their ‘Snow’ tour, they’ll be visiting Vienna. Plus, as this concert will be happening in the awesome location of the Arena’s open air stage, this should be one beautiful experience. Have a listen below:


Arcade Fire

The Canadian Indie Pop Rock band has always been in the business of making music with its own distinct sound and they’ve been exceeding at this in recent years, with their hit single ‘Everything Now’ going nuts in terms of popularity. The waterside club, with the underground club kind of reputation, will return with its event Summer of Food, which combines 2 of the best things in life – a solid party and tasty food! A raft of restaurants and eateries will be popping up at Grelle Forelle’s outside terrace where they’ll be serving up their flavoursome dishes while some DJs get the party started. The atmosphere is always spot on at these warm up events when the weather is fine, so be sure to catch one this month… and no leaving before 6am the next day!

Recommended if you like: slapping people in the face with Frankfurters, dirty love-making in dirty public toilets, street food, summer days by the canal

International Day of Yoga 2018

When: SUN, June 17, 10am–11:30am
Where: Stadtpark

Hosted by the Indian Embassy in Vienna, this event is meant to bring together all yoga enthusiasts for a free, open air, Sunday morning yoga class in Stadtpark. Nice to see the hour they start this is rather decent, so bring your own everything (yoga matt, water, towel, issues to find inner peace for) and start the Sunday in a peaceful, yet energising way under the sun!


Yoga in Donau Nature – Wien Neue Donau

When: SAT, June 16, 10am
Where: meet at Neue Donau U6 subway station

This one is for those that love nature and yoga. This makes for the perfect combination if you ask us and it will be offered up one Saturday morning in June at this new event Yoga in Donau nature. Just imagine all you can hear if the wind, the water and some group of kids bombing into the Donau river in the distance – sounds like the perfect setting to find some inner peace through yoga.

Recommended if you like: yoga, secret spy yogi stuff, being as flexible as a 14-year-old, doing the downward dog, ‘ommm’ experiences, finding inner peace after work, doing yoga under the sun, that moment when you squeeze out a little fart during yoga that nobody can hear
